“I’d like to say it was the panic attack I experienced on the freeway in the middle of Denver that woke me up, but unfortunately I wasn’t that smart. It took more than that to get me going.”
I FELT HORRIBLE
I’d be lying if I told you I remembered the exact time when everything changed for me.
I’d be lying if I knew it was beyond time to change.
I’d like to say it was the panic attack I experienced on the freeway in the middle of Denver that wo me up, but unfortunately I wasn’t that smart. It took more than that to get me going.
I’d like to say it was the time that I went to the doctor and, after running tests she told me the stress of my busy life had crashed my hormones leading to my low energy, excessive fat and thinning hair.
I’d like to say it was the time that my back pain dropped me to my knees where I ended up laying on my back in my backyard crying, waiting for two hours until my wife came home to help me up.
But I wasn’t that smart.
What I do remember was looking in the mirror and waking up to the fact that I had a dad bod.
What I do remember is feeling horrible at how my gut and my love handles jiggled when I went for the occasional run.
What I do remember is the embarrassing moment when I threw my back out in the middle of a presentation and had to wince my way through the rest of it putting on a face of calm while internally I was in excruciating pain.
THE THREE QUESTIONS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
What I remember is eventually asking myself three pivotal questions
How many excuses are you going to make until you just decide to change?
Would you allow your kids or anyone on your leadership team to make these same excuses?
What do you want to be, and how do you want to look and feel 10 years from now?
That’s when everything changed
It was embarrassing
I KNEW better
I had coached top performers to BE better
Executives
Olympic athletes
Professional athletes
Strongmen
Bodybuilders
Champions…
And here I was…THE coach of the leaders with a body that reflected the low standards I had allowed for myself
My body was the walking definition of mediocrity
THE DECISION TO STOP LYING TO MYSELF
At the time I used a phrase in my leadership speaking and trainings that “how you do anything is how you’ll do everything.”
One evening, after I had spoken that phrase to a group of leader in Minneapolis, MN I stood in front of the mirror and thought “how is my health and fitness reflecting in the rest of my life?
That day I stopped lying to myself.
I was mediocre.
Sure, I was speaking all over the country.
Sure, I was coaching top performers.
Yep, everyone that heard me say I was frustrated with how I looked all said the same thing “you look great! You don’t have anything to lose.”
But underneath the perfectly tailored suit was the reality.
I was mediocre.
It was time to change.
I decided it was time to LIVE what I taught.
Fully…not partially.
Live it
Not lie to myself
THE DECISION TO EVOLVE
When I decided it was time to change I knew it couldn’t be a get in shape and get out of shape again type of thing.
It needed to be for life.
And that required an evolution.
That meant that I needed to not just workout, eat better and work harder.
I needed to evolve as a human.
I needed to evolve the way I thought, evolve the way I moved…
I needed to evolve my life.
WHY EVOLVE
Over almost 25 years of coaching people I’ve observed two universal concepts
1. No one ever regretted getting into better shape and,
2. Those that get in shape and stay that way go on a linear path of evolving their body, mind, soul and tribe
My coaching, whether it be health and fitness or life and leadership has always been about what works…not just theory, but what actually gets results.
The EVOLVE method isn’t about getting you lean, strong and fit as much as it is teaching you how to do so and stay that way. It’s about helping you become the most evolved version of you…
The most evolved leader
The most evolved father
The most evolved mother
The most evolved human you were destined to be. Let’s work together to craft your evolution
YOU are the hero of your life’s story
And we’d love to be your guide
